New Hub Blog – Welcome to it.

Putting together a new web site for The Hub – bunch of things floating into place, this blog being one of them. Hit it now and then to see what’s new. See you then.

The Hub’s Music Booking Info

Hey Bands -

Thanks for being curious about performing at The Hub! Here’s info about how things work with live performances. Some of it sounds like an uptight pinhead wrote it, but roll with it – as house rules go they’re minimal and liberal and meant to make sure everyone has a good time without going home in a cast. You can always contact booking@bristolskatepark.com for more info and we’ll be psyched to get to know you and your music through email (see below). Heads-up that we don’t take phone calls about booking – use email.
Our Booking Policies:
The Hub is a teen center – not a nightclub. It’s a responsibly managed, adult-supervised SAFE SPACE for teenagers 12-19 years old. Its universal house rules are: No Hate; No Violence; No Drugs; RESPECT. Under no circumstances, on stage or off, will breaking these rules be tolerated.

Beyond the house rules, the most important thing to The Hub’s managers and crew are that you act responsibly and professionally as artists in your business with us. If you say something, mean it. If you agree to something, do it. Be responsive and make an effort to create a positive, successful show and you’ll be welcomed back. Act privileged, disrespectful, irresponsible toward property, people or the house rules and you risk NEVER being allowed to play here again, or at other venues managed by Bristol’s Recreation Department (Holley Hall, Big Red, etc.). This might sound harsh, but abusing our trust won’t be tolerated and we’re trying to be helpful by letting you know exactly what to expect.

We can have amplified music until 10pm. At 10pm all amplified sound is discontinued.

The Hub invites Bristol police officers and town representatives to all shows; please treat them as guests if they stop in.

Admission to Hub shows is by suggested donation only. The Hub does not charge a flat or sliding admission fee because it exists to serve regional teens inclusively; it will not exclude any local teenagers from Hub events due to the cost of a show.

Booking decisions at The Hub involve a volunteer music programming crew which meets weekly (expect at least a week’s delay to your booking inquiry).

ALL BOOKING INQUIRIES MUST COME VIA EMAIL TO BOOKING@BRISTOLSKATEPARK.COM. We won’t answer telephone calls.

The programming crew will review any booking inquiry sent via email that includes:

Band Name:
Primary contact person (only ONE).
Email.
Cell phone number (the one you’d have on tour with you).
Web address.
Dates you’re looking for.
Examples of your music (MySpace page or attached MP3).
A band photo at least 500 pixels wide with no logos on it.

The Hub has a table for merch and bands keep 100% of sales.

FAQ:

Q. Does The Hub have barriers at shows?
A. No.

Q. Can we use pyrotechnical effects?
A. No.

Q. Can we swear in our lyrics?
A. Yes. The Hub supports your constitutional right to free expression and serves transition-aged youth who know all those words already. How you represent yourself in language is unique to you and the choices you make as artists and professionals. The Hub doesn’t advocate for mature language, but it does protect it.

Q. Does The Hub pay bands to play?
A. The Hub does not offer a guarantee. Proceeds from donations at the door are typically distributed between the bands.

Q. What kinds of music do you book?
A. Anything the volunteer programmers want to commit a show to – hip hop, hardcore, metal, singer-songwriters. There’s no real answer to this question, which is why your music samples are so important to include in your email.

Q. What kinds of music do you NOT book?
A. Regardless of the genre, anything hateful or homophobic or that encourages violence won’t be programmed here.

Q. Where is The Hub?
A. Bristol, Vermont. See the map at the bottom of http://www.bristolskatepark.com

Q. Does the skatepark cost money?
A. No, it’s free.

Q. Is there a pizza place nearby?
A. Yes, one called Cubbers is within walking distance. So’s a Chinese restaurant and a grocery store.

Q. Can I camp there?
A. Not at The Hub, but we’d find a place to camp for you if you need it.

The Hub’s Crew

JIM LOCKRIDGE thehub@bristolskatepark.com

Jim directs The Hub, working to bring money and donations of stuff that make it better and to make sure there’s all kinds of things to do. He’s kind of a musclehead when it comes to the house rules, but since the house rules are ‘No Hate, No Violence, No Drugs, RESPECT’ it just means The Hub is a safe place to be. He’s been there since the spring of 2008 when Ena left. He also runs Big Heavy World, a volunteer-staffed nonprofit in Burlington dedicated to Vermont-made music – it all keeps him busy, justthewayhelikesit.

RYAN KRUSHENICK ryan@bristolskatepark.com
Ryan’s the one singing in the picture (on The Hub’s stage) – he fronts Unrestrained, a Burlington-based hardcore punk rock band. Ryan’s worked with teens basically since he was one, with a focus on prevention. Ryan’s always been involved with music and runs the Hub’s music program, offering free lessons and general guidance with drums, guitars, and bass guitars. He helps the Hublings put live concerts together on the new mini ramp/stage and is a leprechaun when nobody’s looking.

ERIN BUCKWALTER erin@bristolskatepark.com

Erin is directing The Hub’s Nutrition & Garden Programs, and will be working with the Hub teens to start a garden next to the skatepark this spring. Erin has been working with and gardening with teens for years and loves growing/eating yummy veggies.

Hub House Rules

The basic house rules are:

No Hate.
No Violence.
No Drugs.
RESPECT. (yourself and The Hub).

Eveyone who comes inside The Hub signs a promise that says:

I understand that a lot of people wanted me to have a nice teen center so they gave money and donated things to make The Hub, then got Jim, Erin, and Ryan to run it (the staff).

Jim, Erin, and Ryan promise to make The Hub a safe place to hang out in, and to make it better and better all the time. To do that they made this agreement that helps me understand what the rules are at The Hub.

To come to The Hub I have to make a promise to help keep it a safe and comfortable place.

By signing this paper, I promise that I will:

Always respect the building and the people and things in it;

I will never threaten or cause violence to anyone and will never purposefully hurt someone else’s feelings;

I will never throw anything inside the building;

I will never use hate speech (“nigger,” “fag,” “spic,” and words like them);

I will never steal anything from anybody or The Hub;

I will never damage The Hub or Recreation Field or act like I might damage it;

I will pick up my own messes and clean the plates and cups that I use;

I will always get permission and sign-out the Hub things that I want to borrow and will return them or have to replace them;

I will never smoke cigarettes, do drugs or have alcohol on the Recreation Field property, which I know is everything inside the fence, including The Hub, the skatepark, Big Red, the skating rink, dugouts, and ball fields;

I will ALWAYS listen to the Hub’s staff the first time they say or ask anything and understand that whatever they say is the rule because they run it;

I understand really clearly that if I break any part of this promise I will lose the privilege of coming into the Hub or onto the Recreation Field, including the skatepark, Big Red, and the skating rink. I understand that Jim, Erin and Ryan really mean it and will actually not let me in if break this promise.
